Budgie cages

Budgies are quite active and energetic birds and although only small do need reasonably sized cages.

If the budgie is allowed to fly outside of the cage then a standard size cage should be a minimum of 18" by 18", this size would be suitable for a maximum of two birds.

If the birds are not allowed out then larger cages would better, but larger in length rather than height is the thing to remember. Budgies, as with most birds, fly straight rather than upwards, so ideal budgie cages would measure 24" by 36" or longer if space permits.

In the wild, the budgerigar will fly several miles in its forage for food, so although they are a very small bird, they are capable of sustained flights.

As with all animals that are kept as pets or in captivity, they must have ample opportunity to indulge in what is natural to them.

Budgie cages do not need to be elaborate affairs and making your own is quite a simple task.

It is possible to purchase metal cage fronts with opening gates and the rest of the cage need only be made out of plywood or similar.

The metal cage fronts generally come purpose made and so the measurements should be satisfactory, but if in doubt then a bar spacing of no more than 1/2 inch is required, any wider and there is the risk of the budgie either escaping or possibly getting its head stuck between the bars and doing itself an injury.

When constructing budgie cages it is a good idea to incorporate a way of separating areas of the cage, especially if the cages are large ones.

If you need to handle any of the budgies, it can be a bit of a chore to reach them in a large cage and can cause the bird stress or injury even, by chasing them back and forth.

An ideal way of sectioning off large cages is to leave slots in the roof or back so that a sheet of hardboard, for example, can be slid into place and so partition off areas where the birds are.

We've all seen a magicians act where they supposedly saw an assistant in half by placing panels into the box and then separating the sections, well this is the same principle except for the separation and of course the pretty girl in a bathing suit.

If you plan on building budgie cages for breeding purposes then the size requirements do not need to be so ample, a simple 18" by 18" box with cage front would suffice as the breeding pair tend to stay close to the nesting area and do not require much flight space.
